I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: One Nation, under God, indivisable, with liberty and justice for all. |

I guess I am pretty opinionated about this flag, you see it means a lot to me. I know that it has become fashionable to call allegiance to the flag blind patriotism, and to blame patriotism as a method of hiding misdeeds. But this is not so, not so. |

It is just a piece of cloth, currently having 50 stars and thirteen stripes. The number of stars may change if new states become part of this union, but the stripes remain constant as a reminder of the original colonies who banded together to form this union. The Revolutionary War was fought to secure for our citizens freedom and security; to ensure the continued protection of these individual rights a constitution was written so that all the states would be bound by the same basic responsibilities to its citizens and so that the citizens would know their responsibilities to the government. In this country power flows up from the people, the only power that a governement has, is given to it by the voters. The government must reflect the will of the people, it protects the people, it serves the people. Each citizen is given a vote, a most powerful weapon if used. If you are eligible to vote and don't, you have no bitch coming, none! Everybody can express his or her opinion at the ballot box, it doesn't matter if you are black or white, male or female, religious or atheist, if you are eligible to vote, you have the power. No it has not always been so, but the people corrected those injustices over the years, by using the ballot box.

America today is the purest form of democracy on the face of this planet. I have traveled to many far off places and enjoyed them for their various beauties and attributes, but no where is political and personal freedom as abundant as here. Other countries may have better medical care for the poor or better education opportunities supported by the state, but America remains the sole country of choice. Get a clue, no one attempts to sneak into any other country. The poor and oppressed from all over the world are willing to die to come here, just like my ancestors, and yours. |

Our country has committed wrongs in the world, both against its own people and others, but this is not the will of the people, it is not the meaning of the flag. Our Flag is a symbol of what this country has been many times, what it can be, what we want it to be. The Flag is our symbol, our hope, and the hope of every person who gets to this country. The oppressed from all over the world are reaching out for that symbol, in need and hope. They are willing to die for that hope as so many others have died. Our country is full of veterans, mostly silent about the flag, but all fought in the name of it, to support what it stands for. |

|
When you see our flag, pause and look at it proudly, for no where else on this earth will you see such a symbol of what a free people stand for. What could be if we all work for it, what will be if we all strive for it. And what must be if some of us die for it. |

I fought once because my country and my president wanted me to, I would do it again. I don't know of many Americans who have served this country who wouldn't do it again on a moments notice. To us the Flag represents duty, and honor, and is the symbol of an inheiratance we will leave for our descendants. Do not dishonor this symbol, it is the symbol of your country. |
